Hundreds check outTesco jobs

undreds of long- term unemployed

people have registered their interest in jobs being created by a new Tesco supermarket on Teesside. The retail giant is building an eco-store, which is set to open in February, on land opposite Eston Recreation Ground.

The development is set to provide a major shot in the arm for the local economy, with 450 jobs available in the store. And with half of those guaranteed for the long-term unemployed through a special regeneration partnership with Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, demand for the roles is already high. The authority’s Routes to Employment recently wrote to 1,500 people who had been unemployed for six months or longer and had previously declared an interest in the roles.

Jonathan Edwards examines a model of the leisure scheme with Redcar sports stars Danny Hart and Charlotte Ellis

O

ne of Britain’s all-time great athletes came to Redcar to officially launch a £31m project to bring first-class sporting facilities to the town. Former Olympic, world an Commonwealth gold medal winning triple jumper Jonathan Edwards visited the site in Redcar which will be home to a 25-metre swimming pool, training and leisure pool, dance hall, fitness suite and junior gym, and a sports hall. Mr Edwards was joined by two of Redcar and Cleveland’s most promising sporting talents for the landmark occasion. World and European paratriathlon champion Charlotte Ellis, of New Marske, and Redcar mountain biking star Danny Hart were on hand for the ceremony, along with the Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland, Councillor Olwyn Peters.

Charlotte, of the Cleveland

Triathlon Club and New Marske Harriers, has won the world and European titles in the Tri6 category

for the past two years, as well as picking up a host of other medals since starting the sport in 2008. And Danny recently became world champion with an outstanding performance at the Union Cycliste Internationale Mountain Bike and Trials World Championships in Switzerland.

As well as providing an array of sporting facilities, the Redcar Leisure and Community Heart development, between Kirkleatham Street and Coatham Road, will also include business space, community facilities, car parking and landscaped public spaces.

The Redcar Leisure Community Heart project is in the process of applying for part funding by the NE ERDF competitiveness programme 2007 - 2011.

The ERDF Competitiveness Programme 2007-2013 is bringing over £300m into the North East to support innovation, enterprise and business support across the region.

Of those, 773 were later invited for informal meetings with Tesco. More than 600 went on to attend the sessions at St Peter’s Social Club in South Bank, with 559 now undergoing basic skills assessments for the roles.

Interviews for the long-term unemployed posts will follow, with the recruitment process for the remainder of the jobs starting this month.

Once completed, the store will complement

on-going efforts to regenerate the Greater Eston area. Councillor Lynn Pallister, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Neighbourhood Renewal, said: “This exciting development is yet another landmark moment in the regeneration of the South Bank area.

“The demand for the hundreds of jobs available has been extremely high, particularly in these difficult economic times, and we look forward to seeing many local people as part of the workforce when the store opens for business.” To contact Routes to Employment call (01642) 495707 or e-mail routes2@redcar- cleveland.gov.uk
