‘Exceeding our expectations – a great day for English sword dancing’

O

ur traditional sword dances were shown to be very much alive during the annual day of dance held in Guisborough on Saturday 15th October, organised on behalf of the Sword Dance Union by Redcar Sword Dancers. Teams from all parts of the country converged on the town to show off their skills and delight audiences during the displays in and around the streets, before taking part in the closely contested longsword competitions in Prior Pursglove College.

An appreciative audience of fellow dancers and members of the public filled the Stephen Whitehead Theatre to capacity and saw Monkseaton Morrismen, Stone Monkey from Derby and Maltby Nestlings from Rotherham earn themselves a well deserved place in the record books as winners of their classes. Visitors to the event also had the opportunity to view an exhibition of artefacts and photographs of the now defunct East Cleveland teams provided by former members and families from Loftus, Lingdale, Skelton and beyond. We were delighted to be supported by John Hill of Loftus Sword Dancers who provided much of the exhibition material as well as joining the judging panel.

Brian Pearce of Redcar Sword Dancers said ‘The day exceeded our expectations – excellent weather, first class performances

Museum launch of college history

P

rior Pursglove College are pleased to announce the official launch of

the Prior Pursglove College Museum, at 7 Bow Street, Guisborough, which will showcase the long and fascinating history of education in Guisborough. Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, and in partnership with Guisborough Museum, and Gisborough Priory Project, the museum will bring the college’s 450th anniversary year to a celebratory close. Marie Prior, Cultural Heritage Education Officer at Prior Pursglove said: “We are very pleased to have been granted funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund. It not only means that we can begin the process of recording, conserving and preserving our archive - which dates back to 1301 - but

it has also enabled us to put together this exhibition. It is a wonderful opportunity for the college, and we hope that it will raise the profile of our archive, and of the history of Guisborough as a whole.” The museum will be open until 21st December (opening hours Tuesday- Saturday, 10am until 4pm,) and will be staffed by volunteers. Admission and all activities will be free for everyone. It will play host to talks, mini-concerts by student musicians, traditional craft demonstrations, and drop-in workshops on medieval architecture and Victorian childhood. It will also contain exhibitions by Gisborough Priory Project and Guisborough Museum.

The Mayor’s People’s Ball

The Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland, Councillor Olwyn Peters, is hosting a ‘Mayor’s Peoples Ball’ at Bydales School, Marske, on Friday November 25. The Ball which has been organised by pupils from the school and will have an Oriental theme, will not only raise funds for the Mayor’s chosen charities Zoë’s Place, the Mike Findley MND Fund and Coatham House, but will also showcase the talents of young people in the area.

The entertainment will include a performance from the School’s Hit 70s musical disco inferno, performances from Freebrough College’s young talented singer Kelsey Sutcliffe and also from 23 year old popular local singer-songwriter, Jamie Graham from Redcar.

The event takes between 7pm and 11 pm, all are welcome to attend – tickets are only £10 and will include drinks on arrival, two course hot buffet, there will also be a bar

from all the teams and the generous support of the people of Guisborough. Many people have helped to make this event possible, for which we thank them, but we would particularly like to thank Prior Pursglove College for the use of their outstanding facilities, and the Mayor of Guisborough, Councillor Mike Kilby and the Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland, Councillor Olwyn Peters for their support’
