Redcar MP Ian Swales working for you

T

he past few weeks have flown by – it doesn’t feel like a month since I wrote

October’s article but I’m pleased to say there’s loads of fantastic news to report for the Redcar constituency and Teesside this month.

Many of you may have read in the local or national press about the allocation of round two of the Regional Growth Fund. The region already benefitted from £56 million in the first round and will now see £93 million of new investment in the North East, expected to create around 8,500 direct jobs and 17,000 supply chain roles. Businesses in

the Redcar constituency alone, will receive over £5 million of investment from the coalition government, with a further £35 million going to other Teesside companies. The government investment is expected to draw millions of pounds of private sector funds to the region which will continue the upward trend of industry in the North East. There is yet more good news of coalition funding being invested locally. The Lib Dem’s Pupil Premium will see £1.2million invested in the constituency’s most disadvantaged children, with nearly £500 extra awarded to schools for each child. It’s

also been announced that this figure will double in the next financial year, meaning yet more help will be given to take children out of the poverty cycle and ensure their future development by helping them achieve. It’s a shocking fact that pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds are far less likely to achieve academically than their better off classmates – the Pupil Premium is designed to give them a fairer chance and I’m sure the Redcar schools will really benefit. Redcar’s green credentials are continuing to grow, with the launch of a new eco-house at Redcar and Cleveland College. I went along to the opening of this state-of-the-art training facility which will enable local businesses and individuals to explore the latest green technologies and how they can be used and fitted for sustainable living. The eco-house will be used to host a Green Alliance event

in December. This kind of innovative facility is exactly what we need in Redcar and to be at the forefront of green development. Overfields Primary School in Grangetown recently handed me a petition to ‘save our sisters’. The children had cut out pictures and presented them to me to show their support for children to receive universal education by 2015. In 2000, world leaders promised universal education by 2015. With just under 4 years to go there are still 67 million children missing out on school and more than half are girls. I presented their petition to Parliament on 1st November. I hope it will help to raise awareness of the millions of children worldwide who do not have an opportunity to learn. A busy month but, as always, there are fantastic things happening in Redcar.

All the best.

Lib Dems win assurance on future of Redcar Station staff

T

here are no plans to close the ticket office at Redcar train station, according to written assurances secured from Northern Rail. Liberal Democrat Euro MP Fiona Hall contacted the company after Redcar was named in the McNulty Report on the future of rail, as a station which could be operated without staff, to save money. Welcoming the news that there are no plans to close the ticket office, Fiona said: “I was very concerned that the station could lose its dedicated and hard-working staff who provide such a fantastic service to residents and visitors.

“I contacted Northern Rail immediately and am very pleased to have been given this reassurance and to hear that they plan to

local corner shop has come in the top 10 best small shops in a competition run by Parliament every year. Ian Swales, MP for Redcar, nominated 7, Farndale Square, a local corner shop, into the competition when the Manager approached him about it.

The competition is open to all local small shops, and attracts attention from all over the country. The annual All-Party Parliamentary Small Shops competition recognises independent retailers who make extraordinary contributions to their local community.

75 MPs put forward nominations from their constituencies, including the Prime Minister David Cameron and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, and 7, Farndale Square came in the top 10 of all shops nominated. On Friday 4th November, Ian Swales (pictured with Fiona Campbell) presented Fiona with a certificate to congratulate her on getting into the top 10 and for her to display in her

shop.

Ian said ‘’I am delighted to be able to hand over this certificate to Fiona and her team of people here. They have done an amazing job getting this shop up and running again, and it is a vital resource for the Dormanstown community. I am really pleased that this was recognised in Westminster and I wish her luck for the future.’’

Fiona said ‘’It’s great that the work we have put in has paid off. It makes it seem so worthwhile. It is great to be part of the local community. The shop was really missed when it was closed down, and we are getting great support from everyone.’’ She added: ‘’We are also going to provide a real local service to those who need help. It will be targeted at pensioners and the disabled who can struggle to get out for those essential services especially in the bad weather.”

further enhance facilities at the station.” Redcar MP Ian Swales added, “I’m sure people will breathe a sigh of relief at this news. If we want to provide a good service for commuters as well as tourists, a staffed ticket office is vital. “Of course, this is also very welcome news for the staff at the station who can get on with their job without the threat of closure hanging over them.”

In a letter to Fiona, Ian Bevan, the Managing Director of Northern Rail, said “I would like to reassure you that we have no plans to close the ticket office. On the contrary, we want to offer more choice to our customers, expanding our retail options through additional ticket vending machines and the introduction of online retailing.”

he route of the Olympic Torch Relay for the 2012 Olympic Games

today revealed that Redcar and Marske will be visited along the torch’s journey along the length and breadth of the country before its arrival in London in August for the beginning of the Games. The torch is scheduled to arrive in Redcar on Monday 18th June 2012.

Commenting on the news, Liberal Democrat MP for Redcar, Ian Swales said: “I’m really pleased that our constituency will feature on this prestigious journey. Holding the Olympics in Britain is great for the country and I’m sure the appearance of the torch in Redcar will help to boost the games’ profile here.”
