East Cleveland Remembers A

Friends of St Germains – Remembrance Day Service 11/11/11 at 11:00 hours:

unique Remembrance Day Service was held last Friday on the 11/11/11

at 11:00 hours for the first time in the St Germains Graveyard, Marske by the Sea. It was organised by the Friends of St Germains Group and was conducted by the Rev Janet Fife vicar of St Mark’s Church. Committee members of the group took part by reading out the names of the 17 war dead, buried in the graveyard, reading a poem and a Bible reading, along with pupils from Errington Primary School who sang a song.

Some pupils sprinkled poppies on the graves, the British Legion Exhortation was read and Bugler Alexander (Sandy) Peebles played last post and reveille with a minute’s silence being observed.

Wreaths were laid by the Deputy Chair of the Parish Council and Warrant Officer Derek McDonnough, and Edith Alderson who for many years has laid crosses on the graves of the servicemen was given the honour to lay them in this service of remembrance.

Judith Findley (FOSG Organising Secretary) said: “It was a very proud day for our group who have been working hard in the churchyard since May this year. I would like to thank all those who took part in helping to make this first remembrance service a great success, and to the many members of our community for coming along and giving their support, also it was a pleasure to see some veterans and present serving servicemen wearing their medals.”.
