waterford & suir valley railway

The Waterford & Suir Valley Railway is Ireland’s longest narrow gauge railway. It is a voluntary community project, set up to develop a tourist attraction on a section of the abandoned Waterford to Cork railway line which closed to passengers in 1967. The original Kilmeadan Station has been beautifully restored. A converted Irish Rail Mark 2 carriage serves as the ticket office, shop and coffee shop. There is ample car and bus parking and all the facilities have disabled access.

Tickets are checked by the conductor as you board

the train. The guard blows the whistle and waves the green flag to tell the driver everyone is safely on board and he can depart the station. The train journeys through the countryside and along the banks of the picturesque River Suir, offering a glimpse into Mount Congreve Gardens and amazing views across the river to County Kilkenny. The railway opened to the public in 2003 offering a 12km round trip which took 40minutes. In 2010 the track was extended to journey beside the new N25 and through a 40metre tunnel under the road on to the toll plaza for the River Suir Bridge. The 17km round trip now lasts nearly an hour.

This is a unique and exciting tourist attraction and a must see for train enthusiasts of all ages.
