bala lake railway

Rheilffordd Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake Railway) occupies the trackbed of the former standard-gauge Ruabon to Barmouth line of the Great Western Railway. Our line runs between the peaceful village of Llanuwchllyn and what was Pen-y-Bont Halt on the opposite side of Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake) to the market town of Bala. Opened as a narrow gauge railway in 1972, we are one of the younger of the UK narrow gauge railways, although nearly all the steam locomotives we normally use are over 100 years old. The railway, whilst being relatively young in narrow gauge terms, uses the original standard gauge station buildings and signal box. Although there have been considerable changes, adapting premises to our needs, the character of the buildings remain.

talyllyn railway

The Talyllyn Railway’s vintage steam trains run all year round, from Tywyn on the coast through the Snowdonia National Park to Dolgoch Falls, Abergynolwyn and Nant Gwernol through some spectacular unspoiled scenery. Groups always receive a friendly welcome and get an attractive discount. Both their eateries cater for groups: the tea room at Abergynolwyn serves cream teas and cold lunches, King’s Licensed Cafe at Tywyn Wharf serves these in addition to hot lunchtime meals. Tywyn is also home to the Narrow Gauge Railway museum with fascinating exhibits telling the story of little ‘narrow gauge’ railways in Britain. Toilets and free coach parking are available at Tywyn Wharf and Abergynolwyn stations; drivers and couriers are always well looked after and look forward to visiting. Tywyn is slightly off the main coaching routes but the Talyllyn Railway makes the area a worthwhile detour.
