The Dartmouth Steam Railway and River Boat Company that is in operation today, is running due to the efforts of the Dart Valley Railway PLC over the past 30 years. It is a commercial company with a board of directors, enthusiast shareholders and dedicated staff who run and maintain this heritage railway.
In the
early seventies, the Paignton to Kingswear line was threatened with closure by British Railways. It was then that the Dart Valley Railway acquired this section of line and started train services in 1973. The Paignton to Kingswear line is fully up to main line standards and is able to carry the largest and heaviest locomotives in Britain. We are unique in offering combined steam railway, river and sea adventures for days out in Devon. The Sunday Times has awarded our “Round Robin” trip with the best title an attraction could wish for. It was voted the UK’s Number 1 Day Out summer 2010! The Round Robin is a full day out - a steam train journey, ferry crossing, river cruise and bus ride, it is easy to see why it’s got the title it deserves. Dartmouth Steam Railway steam trains travel seven miles along the most spectacular South Devon coast down into the Dart Valley, a designated area of outstanding beauty; with stations at Goodrington Sands, Churston and the beautiful village of Kingswear which sits proudly opposite the pretty Port of Dartmouth.
