great central railway

Voted number 12 on the list of the 50 greatest railway journeys in the world the Great Central Railway is the UK’s only double track, main line heritage railway. It’s the only place in the world where full size steam engines can be seen passing each other – just as it was when steam ruled the rails.
The railway has won a number of awards including “independent railway of the year”, a gold award for the East Midlands best visitor experience and is a quality assured visitor attraction as designated by Enjoy England.
Trains can also be hired for private parties and corporate events. Charter intimate carriages or be really exclusive and hire the Pullman carriages with glamorous bar cars. The railway also has its own function room, Lovatt House, our former goods offices which have been beautifully restored to Victorian splendour and are suitable for events for up to 70 people.

The Ecclesbourne Valley Railway, based at Wirksworth in the Peak District, runs every weekend from Easter to the end of October, on its lines to Duffield and to Ravenstor, 9 miles altogether. There are regular special events and the station at Wirksworth includes a small museum, buffet, visitor facilities and convenient parking. This year the Railway has its own resident steam locomotive which will operate around the station on summer weekends. Wirksworth, known as the Gem of the Peak, was the chief town of the Peak District’s once extensive lead mining industry dating back to Roman times. Its history can be found at the Wirksworth Heritage Centre and the town is well-known for its ancient parish church of St Mary’s: the mother church of the Peak District. Wirksworth is also close to Carsington Water, one of the most popular lakeside attractions in the area.
