Cornwall demonstrated that there is a public hunger for solutions and information on how to make our buildings more efficient and economical to use. There is much sense in adopting a ‘fabric first’ approach, where the construction is well insulated and draught- proofed and takes advantage of what nature provides in the way
of light, heat and shelter. Developments should also enhance rather than harm their natural settings. These are key principles of sustainable design and should underpin strategies for making buildings comfortable and practical spaces to occupy. Despite sounding obvious, it is
surprising how many new buildings ignore these principles and then there is the much greater challenge of making our existing buildings comfortable, healthy and economical places too.
