The green imperative
Article written by Paul Bright, CEO, Cornwall Sustainable Building Trust.
THE economic crisis signals the end of an era and now we have no choice but to live within our ecological limits. However, with fuel and
energy prices reaching stratospheric heights and still rising, even hard- bitten consumers are also looking at ways to save. Gas guzzling cars are being replaced with super- minis and we are all starting to keep a supply of candles and logs for when the lights go out. Foreign holidays are being replaced with ‘staycations’ and bikes are making a real comeback too. Those installing renewable energy devices such as solar-electric panels or wind turbines get enhanced payments as well as benefiting from producing their own power. Soon there will also be payments for installing
renewable heat devices and this is driving a rush towards renewable systems. The result of this sudden adoption of renewable alternatives seems to have catalysed a dawning curiosity and awareness of how we depend on our surroundings. This in turn has made us ask questions about the sense of transporting things around the planet instead of using what is available locally. Suddenly it is cool to
keep warm with sheep’s wool insulation. Energy saving appliances are the norm not the exception. Healthy and non-toxic options are sought in all our household requisites from paints to flooring to the food we eat. The only economy with a future is the green one.
