experienced engineer who spent many years working at home and abroad in his previous employment as a semi-conductor engineer, a career where he learnt not only to apply his mechanical and electrical engineering knowledge but to troubleshoot and maintain as well as install. When Andy’s interest in wind turbines became a desire to create a business, these skills and the experience of working with a continually developing technology were to stand him in good stead not only in terms of installing the technologies but also in enabling us to efficiently repair and maintain into the future. As one of the first Microgeneration Scheme registered installers in the region, we are now in our third year as an accredited renewable energy business with a wealth of experience in the installation and maintenance of wind turbines, solar panels and heat pumps. We are delighted to extend a welcome to all to visit us at our showroom at Unit 24, Crelake
Industrial Estate, Tavistock, to request a site visit or to gather information.
■ CROCKWOOD Preservations have been trading for the past 19 years in this area. They specialise in all aspects of damp and timber treatment including the installation of chemical damp proof courses and the application of tanking systems to areas below ground level, basements etc. A full re- plastering service can be provided if required. Timber treatment includes the eradication of wood boring beetle (woodworm) together with wet and dry rot and fungal growth (the latter has been linked to asthma and breathing problems). Financial gains to be had from solar panels
by Chris J Verney, Barum Solarheat
FOLLOWING on from my article in April about the Feed-in Tariffs (FiTs), I see the Government is proposing to slash the financial support available for large-scale solar farms. These are needed to support the grid! Climate Change Minister Greg
Barker said the cash for the green electricity scheme was meant to reward homes, communities and small businesses that produce their own renewable power. Domestic schemes can earn up to 43p per kW/hr (if installed before 31.04.2012) for all R/E electricity exported to the grid, so there are financial gains to be had for what is now a falling capital outlay.
Solar PV installations of less than 50kW are not affected by the Government’s changes, however existing rates reduce slightly after April 2012, and
marginally over the next 25-year ‘guaranteed life’ of the scheme. An average household solar PV installation is around 2.5kW- 3.6kW with expected output of up to 1000kW/hrs per year per kW installed.
Existing Microgeneration customers who suffered a drastic cut in their ‘old’ feed-in tariff rates can upgrade to a maximum of 3.9kW - and claim the new FiT rates, but they need to replace their old PV modules and some other system parts and components with MCS-approved products. We are involved with several of these upgrades. Our new 300W size PV modules enable more output to be achieved than previous modules with lower costs per kW installed.
