June-July 2011 South West Building & Construction 23 BUSINESS TO BUSINESS

THE Spring Factfile roadshow from Knowles, the Construction Contracts Consultants, proved extremely popular at venues in the South West. In total, nearly 100 delegates attended one or other of the events, including a very healthy 51 at the Exeter event, held at the racecourse. Now in its eighth season, this popular series of breakfast briefings has been designed to allow professionals within the construction industry to keep up to date with developments. The early morning format of free seminars is clearly an attractive way of imparting reliable technical knowledge and providing effective training, for which CPD certificates are issued. The topic this time was ‘Contemporary Contractual Nightmares’, presented by Knowles consultant and director Keith Tregunna, an experienced practitioner. Among the important topics discussed were the pitfalls of poor record-keeping when making contractual claims, the status of the construction programme and the linked matter of critical delay. It is vital that all participants in a contract scenario are aware of the pitfalls of an incomplete knowledge of their roles and responsibilities.

The current economic climate is clearly having its effect on the industry. Competition is fierce for the projects that are going ahead and

miscalculations of liability and risk can be costly. It is crucial that all of those involved make a clear and realistic assessment of their obligations and minimise the risk of things going wrong. Knowles are well positioned to

provide their consultancy services both in terms of front-end advice to assist in the smooth running of projects, and also to resolve problems if difficulties arise. The multi- professional make-up of their team ensures that the most appropriate expertise is brought to bear on each individual enquiry. Their main office in the region is in Bristol (bristol@jrknowles.com). If you would be interested in attending an event in the Factfile series which are held each spring and autumn, or would like to hear more about Knowles’ services, please contact Molly Stephens on 0117 930 3571 or email molly.stephens @jrknowles.com.

Advice and help with training

Article from Somerset Construction Training Group

THE Training Group has been in existence for 3.5 years, influencing, advising and assisting construction companies in Somerset.

Our aim is to continually

improve the skills of people and move all businesses forward. Encouragement is given to train, upskill and offer places to apprentices with the added advantage of help and support from the Training Officer, Hilary Neal.

Hilary has worked within the construction industry for several years, having in-depth knowledge of this business and its people which enables her to source the valuable information required to help Group Members. The Group is financially supported by Construction Skills and is a ‘non profit making’ organisation working to develop and enhance local companies and their employees.

The Group consists of Somerset-based businesses whose expertise, knowledge and quality continually moves them higher on

the construction ladder. One such member, CS Williams Ltd of Taunton, recently completed a prestigious project for the National Trust - Tyntesfield House at Wraxall, Bristol. Extensive, sensitive

conservation works were required and expectations with regard to quality of work very high. Another Group Member, West

Country Tiling, also carried out major roofing works to all zone areas on both the Mansion and Abbey at Tyntesfield.

Both companies, highly skilled in conservation projects, are carded with CSCS Heritage Skill Cards and their knowledge in this specialist field is growing daily. The Training Group is looking

to expand and attract companies who seriously wish to move their business forward in all training aspects. Having an experienced Training Officer dedicated to negotiating discounted rates and totally organising training sessions has been a tremendous asset to existing Members. For additional ‘Member’ information please contact Hilary on tel: 01395 270769 or email: neal84@tiscali.co.uk.

Taynton-Young, the fireproof team has more than 30 years’ experience delivering excellent results for customers. Whether you need adverts, business cards, leaflets, or positive articles in the press, fireproof pr can take care of it all - and it doesn’t have to cost the earth. Fireproof pr worked closely with

Tinhay Building Supplies to provide them with PR, print and advertising collateral to support the opening of their branch in Tavistock. Robert Sorrell from Tinhay Building Supplies said: ‘We got more than we bargained for working with the fireproof team. Without the usual hard sell and “advertising spiel”, they helped us to refine our promotional materials, placed articles in the local and trade press and updated our corporate stationery. They work like an extension of your own team and don’t suggest changes for changes sake. We will continue to call on their services.’

Neal said: ‘We know about the

hard work required to run your own business, and we also know how important it is to get your name to potential customers without it taking up all of your time and money. ‘For more information about how we can ignite your business so it
