LITTLE was it realised that the introduction of the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 would lead to a whole new industry about health, safety and welfare at work. Departments, commissions, regulations, directives, policies, strategies, codes of practice, guidance documents and professional advisers would emerge from the original hundred pages of legislation.
The number of casualties and
fatalities at work plus the publicity given to these incidents was sufficient to prompt the legislation. So what is the principle of the Act? It is simply that employers should take actions to minimise the risks to their employees ‘as far as is reasonably practicable’. The building industry is known for casualties amongst its workforce and the most appropriate regulations affecting it are the Construction [Design & Management] Regulations 2007. Whilst other people in the management chain have
a
responsibility for your health and safety, there is one person who
should really care about your health and safety and that is you.
When accessing a construction site, wear the appropriate kit, inform someone in authority that you are on site, find out what is going on, keep your eyes and ears open (they are your best assets), continuously carry out a visual and mental risk assessment and do not enter any part of the site where you consider it too dangerous for you to go or operate. Do not undertake any activity that produces a hazard to you or anyone else on site. When leaving the site let someone know you are going.
