All buildings should have heat and cold stores

by Chris J Verney, Barum Solarheat

WE oversee and design purpose-built passive heat and cold stores. I believe

every new or

existing building should have both installed - in fact, no planning applications for new builds should be allowed without them!

It has become increasingly apparent that there is a need to provide efficient cooling within buildings due to global warming. This can be achieved by the use of cold stores. Instead of the unwanted cold component being thrown away to the atmosphere when a heat pump produces heat, it is possible to store this near zero, or below ‘negative’ temperature

in a cold store using a glycol solution. Longer storage times are achieved by use of phase- change materials. Also these systems can operate from photovoltaic solar panels and off-peak electricity.

When in the cooling mode, the otherwise ‘thrown away’ heat can be stored.

Heat stores can store hot

water from solar panels or other R/E products or ‘waste heat’ to assist a wet radiator or underfloor heating system, at any later day or time - reducing the operation of fossil fuel boilers.

Accredited renewable energy business

Article from New Generation Energy

NEW Generation Energy Ltd is an established renewable energy business that was begun by Andy and Sonja Metcalf over four years ago. Andy is an experienced engineer who spent many years working at home and abroad in his previous employment as a semi-conductor engineer, a career where he learnt not only to apply his mechanical and electrical engineering knowledge but to troubleshoot and maintain as well as install. When Andy’s interest in wind turbines became a desire to create a business, these skills and the experience of working with a continually developing technology were to stand him in good stead not only in terms of installing the technologies but also in enabling us to efficiently repair and maintain into the future. We

have recently been

installing a Proven 35-2 Wind Turbine at The Pinkery, The Outdoor Education Centre on Exmoor, following our successful maintenance of their smaller wind turbine. As one of the first Microgeneration Scheme registered installers in the region, we are now entering our third year as an accredited renewable energy business with a wealth of experience in the installation and maintenance of wind turbines, solar panels and heat pumps.

The introduction of the

Feed-in Tariff for electricity- producing wind turbines and solar photovoltaic panels has created an opportunity for home owners and businesses to access up to a 10 per cent return over 20 to 25 years on invested capital. We are delighted to extend a welcome to all to visit us at our new showroom at Unit 24, Crelake Industrial Estate, Tavistock, to request a site visit or to gather information.
