These past few months, A1 Lighting has taken a look around some truly inspiring design shows. We’ve rocked the entertainment lighting sector at PLASA, had a great time at 100% Design and fell in love with the products on display at Decorex. This month, we hopped across the water to visit an exhibition we’ve never been to before.

designblok is a dynamic, high profile exhibition highlighting creative ideas and innovative concepts across all areas of the design world – from street furniture to fashion, interiors to theatre sets, architecture to furniture. The six-day event was this year staged in Karlin, a beautiful area in the city of Prague. The event celebrates all areas of design, and it was a great opportunity to take a look at some new design talent.

Prague is a beautiful place for the exhibition, with art at the forefront of the culture of the city. The event takes place in different locations each year, and each time unused buildings give themselves over completely to art.

designblok is a real celebration of art and design, with unused buildings completely offering themselves for use by some of the best names in design.

This year part of the show took place in The Futurama Building, a brand new office building which is the first in the Czech Republic to receive a BREEM rating for its commitment to eco-friendly construction. A second location, the Sporovsky Palace building, saw entire rooms turned into incredible art installations. It was wonderful to see how a city so enamoured with art was willing to offer up entire buildings to be redesigned as exhibition spaces. A number of Czech lighting companies exhibited at the show, including Anolis, Artemide, Shimmers and Lux Lighting. Anolis not only had a stand at the show, but also created the atmospheric lighting outside the exhibition buildings as official supplier of the show. The company supplied a spectacular architectural lighting scheme for the main courtyard space and entrance of The Futurama Building,

comprising eight Robe CitySkape Xtreme fixtures and four CitySkape 96s. The immense power and smooth even wash qualities of these lightsources illuminated the red brick facades with dense, rich colours.

In Prague city centre, Robe and Anolis fixtures were again used for the second building of the show, this time illuminating the front of the Sporkovsky Palace building on Hybernska Street. This was achieved using another two CitySkape Xtremes and three 96s. Visiting designblok was a great adventure for us at A1, and proved to be the perfect place to visit to ensure your finger is on the pulse of new design.
