With LED lighting at the forefront of many designs this year, we take a look at some of this year’s best and brightest installations that are helping to get people into the Christmas spirit.


There’s no getting away from it, Christmas is on its way. Whether you’re the kind of person who shies away from the tinsel and theatrics, or you love humming Christmas tunes and scoffing mince pies from November 1st, Christmas lights can’t help but put smiles on faces. There’s something about the dark cold winter evenings being brightened up by the subtle twinkling of fairy lights that seems to cut through the cold weather and warm your heart…not to mention get you in the mood for Christmas shopping!


One of the country’s most famous Christmas shopping destinations is Oxford Street. Tourists in their thousands flock to spend their money in style under the ever-impressive Oxford Street Christmas lights, and this year will be no exception. The lights have once again been created by Piggotts, a 200-year old British company that has been providing innovative street decorations to the West End since the 1950’s. This year’s mile long installation focuses on shooting stars, and there are ten in total hung across the street along with presents and umbrellas. The installation is made up of 600,000 LED bulbs, offering an energy saving of 75% compared with the same installation fitted


out with conventional bulbs. Piggotts have created the famous lighting scheme for Oxford Street for over fifty years, and are extremely proud to have been chosen once again; “It is an honour to be contracted year on year by the Oxford Street retailers, and we are proud of our new displays” explains Lee Harvey, Managing Director at Piggotts. “We have a long tradition of providing the most innovative and unique schemes to many of the UK’s most prestigious locations and look forward to seeing the public enjoy our latest designs over the festive period.” The lights were switched on at a special ceremony on November 1st by UK girl group The Saturdays, and will remain in place until January 5th.


Following the Christmas spirit over in St. Christopher’s Place, James Glancy Design has created a lighting scheme to brighten up the dark winter nights. The company has been designing the lighting schemes for the shopping destination for over twenty years, and has this year gone with a beautiful design that incorporates mirror balls suspended throughout the estate, which are lit by Meyer spotlights that ensure light is showered on the street. As well as this, polythene globes with low


energy bulbs create a lighting design that has a beautiful ethereal feel to it. James Glancy, Director of the company is very proud to have been offered the opportunity this year; “St Christopher’s Place was our first ever client back in 1989 and we are absolutely delighted still to have an opportunity to provide designs that we are passionate about and feel really make a difference.” As well as creating the Christmas lights for St. Christopher’s Place, Paul Dart of James Glancy Design has also designed the Spirit of St. Christopher sculpture, which integrates perfectly with the Christmas lights and will be a permanent fixture as part of a £1Million pound investment in the shopping destination.


Lighting becomes a central feature of many retail environments over the Christmas period, and a number of retailers are creating special lighting installations to enhance the shopper experience over the festive season. One such retailer is famous department store, Selfridges. Christmas is an incredibly important season for retailers, and any competitive advantage to entice customers is invaluable. For Selfridges, lighting provides an ideal opportunity to create a shopper experience to remember.
