ventilation with heat recovery, where air is moved from high occupancy spaces to low occupancy ones. Additional heat can be supplied via simple electrical heating elements in the air ducts if required. Currently, the majority of new-build schools do not achieve good enough air permeability values to warrant the incorporation of a mechanical ventilation system.
Self-generating - All
electricity will be provided on- site via photovoltaic panels. The site will be connected to the national grid, with a philosophy of balancing the electricity imported and exported over the annual cycle.
Understanding how the
building works and its positive impact on revenue will ensure a change of behaviour and attitude to energy and sustainability; this will be supported through an intensive training programme for governors, teaching/FM staff and

pupils extending to the local community in their use of the ‘extended school’. School managers will be able to budget zero costs for heating and electricity and knowing this is achievable should ensure ongoing good practice.
Examples of the construction
make-up and technology utilised, including a small PV panel on display, will be displayed throughout the school with sections exposed for observation. A real-time, and running annual total, electricity/carbon meter will be placed in a prominent position in the entrance lobby so all can see if the building’s zero- carbon status is being maintained. Over the life of the building, it is considered that the most important aspect is to design for low energy usage. This not only limits use of fossil fuel but also reduces CO2 emissions. It is for these reasons that we are

promoting Montgomery as the UK’s first Zero Carbon School. It is to be further noted that as a result of all the heating and electricity being produced on site, the school will benefit in savings on utility bills. The
savings thus affected can support future maintenance and educational budgets making the school a truly zero carbon, self- sustainable, standalone ‘environment of learning’.
