South West Building & Construction 31 ALZHEIMER’S RESEARCH UK Special focus on leading charity

ALZHEIMER’S Research UK is the UK’s leading research charity for dementia.

The charity is dedicated to funding world-class research and scientific studies to find ways to treat, cure or prevent Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, Lewy Body disease and fronto- temporal dementia. Alzheimer’s Research UK (which changed its name from the Alzheimer’s Research Trust in February) does not receive any Government funding and instead relies on donations from individuals, companies and charitable trusts to fund its vital work.

The Devon-based business, A Sweep Plus (www.a-sweep- plus.co.uk), has supported the charity this year. Chimney sweep Colin Adams, who runs the business, and his family opened up their large garage in Black Torrington to visitors over Christmas and the New Year. Members of the public were welcome to visit the walk-in grotto filled with snowmen,

music and lights. A total of £215 was raised.

As the number of people with dementia rises, there is an urgent need to develop new treatments. The charity consults with scientists on the best way to support research and only funds the best and most innovative work by the most promising researchers. Alzheimer’s Research UK has funded 290 research projects to make real progress towards ways to prevent, treat or cure dementia. Such projects have included the understanding of the causes of Alzheimer’s, the improvement of diagnosis, the possible treatments for Alzheimer’s, understanding how we might prevent dementia and building capacity for dementia research. The charity also provides free information on dementia and the progress being made by research via its free e-newsletter and booklets.
