South West Building & Construction 15 ENVIRONMENT TOPICS Gerrard completes first major contract

RENEWABLE energy graduate Gerrard McKillen has just completed his first major contract after setting up Source Solar via the ESF (European Social Fund) Convergence-supported Graduate Start Up Programme.

Mr McKillen graduated in

renewable energy - a Camborne School of Mines course run by Combined Universities in Cornwall partner the University of Exeter at Tremough - in 2009. He then gained work experience with renewable energy companies before starting on the Graduate Start Up Programme in April 2010.

Source Solar specialises in

fitting solar PV (photovoltaic) panels to domestic and commercial buildings and Mr McKillen’s first major contract has been to do just that at Jubilee Wharf, Penryn - a development already known internationally for its environmental sustainability. Mr McKillen, whose company is based in Penryn, said: ‘The opportunities provided by the Feed-in Tariff for homeowners and businesses to install a solar PV system are fantastic. Businesses with a large roof space can benefit a lot from a PV panel installation - they can reduce their electricity bills by a couple of thousand pounds a year

and to shape it into competitive business to strengthen Cornwall’s economy.’

investment of up to 10 per cent it really is a great time to install a solar PV system. ‘I have previously worked in the construction industry so can offer practical skills as well as the academic knowledge. Jubilee Wharf was a great project for me to get and was quite a learning curve.

‘I would not be here if it Gerrard McKillen.

and now the Feed-in Tariff means they can receive payments for every unit of electricity they generate even if used onsite. Any unused power can be exported back to the National Grid generating further income. ‘Typically a solar PV system on a commercial building or home will pay back its capital investment in around 10 years and with Feed-in Tariff payments lasting 25 years a considerable profit can be realised. Householders can reduce their electricity bills and with electricity prices increasing year on year this has got to be a good thing. And with generous tariff payments offering returns on
