Consumers will be paid a tariff RENEWABLE HEAT INCENTIVE
A NEW initiative aimed at increasing the amount of heat produced from renewable sources will be launched later this year. Under the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) consumers will be paid for producing heat from renewable sources. Like the Feed-In Tariffs for electricity from
renewable sources, the level of RHI payments will be set by the Government. It will be administered by the official regulator, Ofgem, and paid for directly by the Treasury. RHI is for everyone, including households, landlords, businesses, farmers, schools, hospitals, care homes and more. The RHI can even be used by entire communities, coming together to invest in a renewable scheme from which they will all use the heat and share the income.
People taking part in the RHI scheme will
save money by not needing to use as much gas or oil (if any), both of which are becoming increasingly expensive year-on- year.
Those in the scheme will be given a fixed payment for each kWhr of hot water and heat they generate and use themselves. It will depend on exactly what systems a person uses and how large they are as to what the exact tariff level is. The overall cost savings are likely to be significant. The RHI tariffs are likely to last for
between 10 and 23 years depending on which type of system is used. It has been estimated that most of people in the scheme will earn enough money from the tariffs to pay off the installation costs of renewable systems in about seven to nine years. Tariffs will be paid starting in June this
year. However, any suitable system installed now will be eligible for the tariffs when they begin.
If the system is under 50kW, Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) certified installers must be used, along with the products they fit. For larger systems and all biomass systems, a company with the relevant experience and an understanding of RHI should be used. Any eligible system installed now will be able to start receiving payments as soon as the RHI launches - and in the meantime consumers will still be saving money on heating bills.
Once the RHI does launch, most installers will able to assist with registering a system. The RHI is seen as a vital step towards the UK meeting its 15 per cent target of energy to be generated from renewable sources by 2020.
Achieving the targets could provide £100 billion worth of investment opportunities and
up to half a million jobs in the renewable energy sector by 2020. The RHI has also been welcomed as excellent news for all Microgeneration Certification Scheme installation companies and product manufacturers as it will drive the heat- generating renewable energy industry forward.
The Microgeneration Certification Scheme is an independent scheme that certifies microgeneration products and installers in accordance with consistent standards. It is designed to evaluate microgeneration products and installers against robust criteria providing greater protection for consumers. The MCS is the only certification scheme
to cover all microgeneration products and services, and has support from the Department of Energy and Climate Change, industry and non-governmental groups as a prime method for making a substantial contribution to cutting the UK’s dependency on fossil fuels and carbon dioxide emissions. Among the renewable sources covered by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme are: solar heating collectors, solar PV, micro wind, heat pumps, biomass and heat-led micro-CHP. *There will be more on the RHI in the next issue of South West Building & Construction magazine.
