6 South West Building & Construction

December 2010

No room for complacency INFORMATION

Article from SSG Training and Consultancy

ACCORDING to the latest figures issued by the Health and Safety Executive, annual fatalities in the construction industry dropped again in 2009- 2010 to 42 workplace deaths.

Although these numbers are still tragically too high, it is a 60% reduction since the recent record high of 105 construction deaths in 2001. The new figures have led to

many positive comments throughout the industry. However, the week

commencing Monday, October 18, saw the death of a 23-year- old in a collapsed drainage trench, followed by a man struck by plant on the M5, a double fatality beneath a collapsed wall and a man crushed under a lorryload of bricks. The grim week closed with a fatal fall from a scaffold.

Six construction fatalities in six tragic days.

SSG Training and Consultancy, says: ‘There is no room for complacency where safety is concerned. Safety management is about consistency, keeping an eye keenly on the ball and not resting on the laurels of falling statistics. ‘As the construction industry

continues to recover from recession, sensible practical management of workplace risk is imperative. Experience has shown that the accident numbers can increase during upturns as businesses grow again; there is no room for complacency whatever last year’s statistics show.

‘SSG, a local health and safety training and consultancy firm, is committed to the support of construction safety and raising awareness in the industry. ‘These fatalities, all of which were preventable, should make every company look closely at how they are preventing accidents and ask themselves the question - “are we doing enough?”’

The team at SSG Training & Consultancy would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas.
