December 2010 South West Building & Construction 11 NEWS

Large turnout for Knowles briefings

THE recent Autumn Factfile roadshow from Knowles, the Construction Contracts Consultants, proved extremely popular at venues in the South West and South Wales. In total, 179 delegates attended at one or other of the three events, including a very healthy 79 at the one held at Exeter Racecourse. This tried and tested formula of free seminars is clearly an effective and attractive way of imparting sound technical knowledge and delivering effective training. CPD certificates are provided to those who require them. The early morning format also means that the events do not eat too much into the working day. In fact, the bacon rolls are the only things that are completely eaten into!

The topic this time was ‘Key risk considerations under the New Engineering Contract’ (NEC3), presented by Knowles consultant and associate director Mark Stevenson, an experienced practitioner in this field. It was clear from the size and make-up of the audiences that there is much interest from all sectors of the construction industry in this form of contract, most notably for projects in the public sector. It is however vital that all participants in the procurement process ‘buy into’ the philosophy of the NEC contract and its procedures and divisions of responsibilities. Mark’s warmly

received presentation concentrated on the important issue of the assessment and apportionment of risk and the courses of action that must be taken.

It is clear that the current economic climate is having its effect on the construction industry. Competition is fierce for the projects that are going ahead and the services that continue to be required. It is nevertheless crucial that all of those involved make a clear and realistic assessment of the cost and resource implications of their endeavours and minimise the risk of things going wrong. Knowles stand ready to

provide their consultancy services both in terms of front- end advice to assist in the smooth running of projects, but also to resolve problems if difficulties arise.

The multi-professional make- up of their team ensures that the most appropriate expertise is brought to bear on each individual enquiry. Their main office in the region is in Bristol, with subsidiary offices in Exeter and Cardiff. If you would be interested in attending an event in the Factfile series which are held each spring and autumn, or would like to hear more about the services that Knowles can provide, please contact Molly Stephens on 0117 973 8554 or email her at molly.stephens@jrknowles.com.
