Forbo’s Flotex backs a winner at Belle View greyhound stadium

With thousands of spectators passing through the building each month, the flooring at Manchester’s Belle View Greyhound Stadium needs to be tough. From acoustic properties to non-slip requirements, not to mention the large quantities of trackside sand and grit walked in on customers’ feet, the flooring faces challenges on several fronts. However, successful on-site trials have demonstrated that Forbo Flooring Systems’ Coral entrance matting, Surestep vinyl and Flotex flocked flooring products are more than up to the task.

When Maintenance Manger Paul Brookes approached Steve Holland of Steve Holland Flooring Ltd for product recommendations, he asked for a robust and easily cleaned solution. With several doors leading directly onto the side of the racetrack, the sheer volume of footfall passing in and out of the building led to the previous flooring becoming prematurely worn out. Therefore, a product that is tough enough to withstand the daily onslaught was top of the list when it came to the new specification. Already familiar with Forbo’s products,

Steve recommended Flotex tiles as a hardwearing and easily maintained solution. In addition, this flocked floor covering delivers excellent slip resistance and acoustic performance – key requirements for a venue that is regularly filled with excited racing fans.

The unique composition of Flotex, which has over 70 million electrostatically flocked fibres per square metre, offers the hard wearing and washable characteristics of a resilient floor, yet also the warmth, comfort and acoustic properties of carpet. Being completely waterproof, Flotex is also the only truly washable textile floor covering. “We looked at a number of floor

coverings from various manufacturers but I was convinced that Forbo’s products were the best solution based on the stadium’s needs,” Steve commented. “In my experience, Flotex is extremely durable, with a strong construction that will not break down under the intensity of use the stadium will place on it.” Keen to prove its worth, Steve organised a trial installation to demonstrate the product’s performance under real-life conditions. In addition, to underline the added benefits of installing an integrated entrance matting system, Steve installed one section of Flotex on its own and another in conjunction with Forbo’s Coral duo entrance matting system. Paul was delighted with the results and a full refurbishment programme followed,

entrance matting was installed to tackle the worst of the sand and grit being tracked in on customers’ shoes. “I was very happy with the results of the trial installation, as it proved that the Flotex tiles and the integrated entrance system are up to scratch,” Paul commented. “This is a really busy venue and so it is essential that the flooring is able to cope with the heavy foot traffic.”
