washrooms & changing areas

Bespoke

specificiation

A CONTEMPORARY design and high-end feel and finish is the result of a back of house refurbishment at the Mandarin Oriental in Hyde Park, London. Washroom Washroom completed the

project for the staff changing and shower areas at the hotel, manufacturing and installing a number of bespoke specifications in both male and female changing areas, which included cubicles, showers, vanity units, lockers and benching. Specifications included the modern Luminoso frameless glass shower cubicle system alongside the Marcato WC cubicle range. Customized hybrid Octave lockers ensured safe and secure storage for staff and changing areas were complete with matching Corian vanities and Concerto solid ducts.

Glass lockers and cubicles feature in the 3,400sq ft changing areas

THE brief for Ben Kelly Design at the 25,000sq ft fitness club was to further develop the brand within the context of Westfield shopping centre. An emphasis was placed on raising the perceived elegance through materiality, while retaining the core approach that had given the previous clubs such a strong visual language. This extended to the club’s 3,400sq ft changing areas where Ben Kelly Design selected glass lockers and cubicles, featuring bright colour combinations, from Prospec. Prospec supplied more than 400 glass

lockers and 27 glass cubicles to the club. The selected colours are made more vibrant by a ceramic process applied to an ultra- white toughened glass. This overcomes the greening affect of standard glass which can distort the colour appearance. Marathon glass lockers were installed, which incorporate aluminium bodies and profiles with moulded plastic shelves. The lockers can be cleaned by hosing down without the risk of degradation. The materials and the internal shape of the lockers overcome the problems associated with square cornered composite board

bodies with poor ventilation, associated with most health club lockers. Glass shower cubicles in matching colours were also installed in the Cabrillant system. Both the locker and cubicle systems have

a proven and tested life cycle, specifically engineered for high use situations. The glass engineering experience and testing are an essential element to ensure safety and performance. It is just not possible to treat glass as another panel media using fittings which are not designed for commercial glass construction, for example, the use of domestic shower components, fittings made from low grade stainless or chrome plated metal, both of which will deteriorate in heavily used shower areas. The same applies to the use of cast acrylic which can chip or shatter into sharp shards. The design theme at Gymbox Westfield will be used in the next Gymbox facility as well as in the refurbishment of an existing club using a different combination of colours. The brand aims to have five clubs open by then end of 2011.
