Sound barrier
A HIGH performance acoustic overlay has been used to combat noise transfer at a Grade II listed hotel in Cheltenham. Installed at the refurbished Montpellier Chapter hotel to exceed Part E Regulations, the composite sandwich laminate incrementally dampened impact and airborne sound in the 61 guest bedrooms, which are housed over three storeys. CMS Acoustics specified SoundLay Plus, a high performing acoustic barrier, for the hotel refurbishment to solve the problem of both impact sound generated through footfall and airborne sound caused by in-built audio equipment in every suite. Approximately 1,000sq m of the
resilient acoustic overlay was installed in all guest bedrooms to significantly reduce the passage of noise through the floor. As part of listed building controls, the acoustic solution needed to be compatible with the retained wood subfloor. Primarily designed for timber applications but suitable for use with all subfloor types, SoundLay Plus achieves impact sound attenuation of 55dB and airborne sound insulation of 49dB. The acoustic overlay was fitted with a carpet floor finish in all guest bedrooms.

backed, sports-grade flooring with a natural timber appearance that complies with BS EN 14904, was specified for the large sports hall, which is in constant use for football and basketball, and needed a robust and safe playing surface.
The wood-effect theme continues in the
main lounge area of the centre, where AltroSmooth Ethos, a 2mm vinyl flooring designed to provide a hygienic, hard-wearing, yet attractive surface, has been installed. The centre’s kitchen has been fitted with
Altro Suprema safety flooring, which has a non-sparkly, modern look and offers cleanability and slip resistance. The more decorative Altro Mirica safety flooring, which combines good looks with ease of cleaning, has been used in the toilets.
