tailoring programs to meet their needs. While these study options continue multiply, recent trends seem to be tugging students in opposing directions—keeping them near, and driving them far. Let’s begin with the far. Plenty

of young people are eager to put a distance between themselves and their homes as soon as that is realistically possible. Tey relish the idea of getting out and about in the wider world, of finding their own footing far away from the familiar sights and sounds of the place where they grew up. Tey’re off to seek their fame and fortune. For people like that, attending

a college or university in another province is a wonderful opportunity to create the separation. It’s a chance to discover for themselves the ups and downs of fresh freedoms, the opening they need to gain the

exposure they crave to events and ideas they’d never encounter in their hometown. But other young people

are more than content to stay close to where they already are. It’s generally much more practical than travelling away.

Every school is local somewhere. Each has a way of specializing, of developing a reputation in a particular field or approach to learning. Each nurtures a style—a culture—that will inevitably suit some students well but prove distracting for others. It may be easiest to simply sign up at the local college, but it could well require looking at places further afield in order to discover the very best fit.
