Fun for all at Edenbridge’s annual bonfire extravaganza

EDENBRIDGE will once again be filled to capacity as the town celebrates its annual Torchlight Procession and Fireworks Extravaganza.

Fire will fill the narrow streets and colour will light up the skies as visitors and residents alike celebrate Guy Fawkes’ night on Saturday, 5 November. With a road closure in place from around 6pm, the Edenbridge Bonfire Society’s event is sure to be its usual spectacular success with

marching bands, scores of floats and costumed walking parties all lit by thousands of flaming torches in the procession followed by a huge firework display at the Lingfield Road recreation ground.

A band playing in the High Street from around 6.15pm will help get revellers in the mood as they wait for the procession, which is scheduled to set off from Fircroft Way at about 6.30pm.

The procession will be led by the Bonfire Bishop, flanked as usual by his loyal choirboys, Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn and Guy Fawkes, and make its way through the town, turning round at the south end to retrace its steps along the High Street. To watch the procession is free but collectors in fancy dress will be out in force and all money collected will go to local worthy causes in the area. In recent years the procession has generated almost £50,000 for local charities. The crowd will then head off to the recreation ground for a magnificent firework display accompanied by rousing music, which is scheduled to start at about 8.30pm.

As usual, the Bonfire Bishop will kick off the proceedings by reciting the traditional poem starting with the immortal lines ‘Remember, remember the fifth of November, gunpowder, treason and plot, I see no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be forgot’. What follows

Getting to Edenbridge

THE many thousands of people who attend the procession each year make sure they arrive in good time to avoid the road closure from 6pm.

Travel by road is easy as the town lies only eight miles from junction six of the M25 along the B2026 or 12 miles from Tunbridge Wells.

There are also two stations – Edenbridge and Edenbridge Town. The Tonbridge/Redhill line runs north of the town, while the Croydon/Uckfield line is near the centre of town in Station approach just off the High Street.
