Staying safe on fireworks night
FIREWORKS will be on sale across the country ahead of Bonfire Night on 5 November so the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents is urging people to plan ahead to ensure they and their guests stay safe at parties.
The safest place to enjoy fireworks is at properly organised displays but RoSPA recognises that not everyone can attend such events.
Caterham gears up for bonfire night
CATERHAM Round Table’s annual torchlight procession, bonfire and firework display will give local people the chance to enjoy some traditional firework night fun in the town.
This year’s event will be held at Dene Field at the top of Church Hill, Caterham on Saturday, 5 November.
But work really starts much earlier in the day at 9am when Table members will be hard at work building the bonfire. Tickets for the display can be purchased on the night or in advance at £4 until 5pm on Friday, 4
November.
They are available from many shops in Caterham and Caterham on the Hill. Gates open at 6pm with the torchlight procession leaving We s t w a y Common at 6.30pm.
The bonfire is lit at 7.15pm. The fireworks follow once the bonfire has died down. Money raised from the display helps to support local charities.
Good preparation is vital if you are arranging a fireworks celebration at home. Now is a good time to start thinking about issues such as:
• The law concerning fireworks. • Whether you have enough space for your guests to watch from a safe distance. • Who will be attending your party – will there be lots of children around? • Suitable sites for a bonfire if you’re having one.
• Who will be responsible for setting off the fireworks. RoSPA’s fireworks website –
www.saferfireworks.com – has everything you need to know about planning a safe fireworks display. It provides details on UK law and tips for setting up a display.
Sheila Merrill, RoSPA’s public health adviser, said: “Remember that planning in advance for fireworks parties at home is key to putting on a safe display. It’s a sad fact that each year, hundreds of people are injured by fireworks on and around Bonfire Night, and many more people are injured at private parties than at public displays.”
