Tandridge/Edenbridge Chronicle November 2011
Edenbridge Town Council By town council clerk Christine Lane
BIG Society has been in action again in Edenbridge with a team of volunteers assisting the council’s groundstaff in tidying the Millennium Wood.
The trees planted back in 2000 are now firmly established and the team removed self-set saplings and overgrowth to establish a woodland floor allowing light and air to create the right natural environment for further development of the woodland. The benches were given a coat of paint and the pathways were repaired. The sun shone and the team brought their flasks and sandwiches and enjoyed lunch together in the woodland.
If you would like to join the team for other events please contact Kathy at the council offices on 01732 865368. If your skills lie in a different direction the town’s Emergency Planning Group are seeking foreign language speakers to assist with communication and translating in the event of an emergency. The group already have residents skilled in first aid and with advanced amateur radio skills. They work closely with the Emergency Services within the Kent Emergency Plan. With the diverse nature of the local community a wide range of languages are spoken and the group is keen to develop a list of local residents who could be called on if the need arose. Again contact Kathy as above.
As the clocks have gone back and the autumn leaves are dropping from trees there is no escaping the fact that winter is on its way. Hopefully, this winter will not see a return to the treacherous conditions experienced last year in the prolonged cold snap, but just in case the Winter Services Plan has been reviewed. Requests were made for additional grit bins in a number of locations. Kent Highways have carried out assessments and have decided to place a new bin on the Spitals Cross Estate at Stoneyfield. The salt/sand mix is for use on the road to enable vehicles to get up and down the slope if the weather becomes icy. Supplies of the salt/sand mix are limited and Kent Highways will refill the bin if supplies allow.
Please use it sparingly and remember it is not for use on private property.
As I write this column I’m beginning to wonder who will have the honour of being the celebrity guy at this year’s firework spectacular. Wayne Rooney was a popular choice last year and went off in an enormous ‘explosion’. If you are new to the town I would urge you to invite your friends and get your tickets early. It is a fantastic evening with a torchlight carnival procession through the High Street and fireworks at Lingfield Road Recreation Ground. Yet another example of Big Society in action in Edenbridge.

By Eden Valley Chamber of Commerce president Peter Kingham
AS I am sure most of you will know by now, the chamber successfully launched the Loyalty Card in Edenbridge this month and I am very happy to tell you from first hand experience that we have got off to a flying start! Just over 30 Edenbridge businesses signed up for the launch and two more have signed up since but the really pleasing thing has been the response of the people of Edenbridge. We already have lots of completed cards ready to go into the first draw, which will take place on Saturday, 3 December, and many many people have taken up the cards so I look forward to receiving lots more over the coming weeks. Just so as you know, the completed cards can be dropped off at the two collection points at either end of the High Street, The Edenbridge Florist at the bottom and at the top of the town, Magnolias. All participating shops and businesses have cards to give out so if you haven’t got one yet, pick one up and join in the fun. For more information about the card and other things the chamber is doing have a look on our website
www.edenvalleychamber.org.uk I mentioned that the draw was going to take place on Saturday, 3 December, and I am delighted to
announce that Eden Valley Chamber of Commerce is organising a Christmas Spectacular to take place in the High Street that day with
late shopping, market stalls, fun rides, music, carol singers, street vendors, a massive hall of mirrors, petting donkeys and a Santa’s Grotto, hosted and sponsored by our friends at Akeide. We are hoping that it will be a proper family afternoon and evening with lots to do, see and buy, a great way to begin your Christmas run up. I am particularly happy to tell you that the town’s Christmas lights are to be switched on by Leslie Grantham (Dirty Den to those fans of EastEnders) and the cast of the panto Mother Goose. Lesley will also be drawing the first winner of the Eden Valley Loyalty Card so there is a lot to look forward to in December. Finally, look out for the Eden Valley Chamber float at the Bonfire Parade on 5 November, we will be supporting the Bonfire Society and promoting the Loyalty Card. Remember, to use a phrase from a certain supertanned individual, you’ve got to be in it to win it. Have a happy and safe Fireworks Night.
Help protect local recreation grounds
TANDRIDGE District Council is working with Fields in Trust to help protect 2012 outdoor recreational spaces by 2012 as a permanent, tangible legacy from both the Diamond Jubilee and the London 2012 Olympics.
The Queen Elizabeth II Fields Challenge is led by Prince
William and local residents are being asked to vote online by 18 November at
www.qe2fields.com/Castyourvote.aspx for one of the recreation grounds that have been nominated.
They are Broadbridge Lane Open Space, Smallfield; Dormansland Recreation Ground; Felbridge Playing Fields; Grange Meadow, Bletchingley; Lagham Road, South Godstone; Queens Park, Caterham; Stafford Road, Caterham; Talbot Road, Lingfield and Whyteleafe Recreation Ground. Cllr Tony Elias, who is chairman of the community services committee, said: “This is a great initiative and I would urge residents to go online and vote for their favourite recreation ground. We recognise the importance of open spaces and are committed to maintaining them.” For details contact Steve Hyder on 01883 722000 or email

Back sports club plea
THE Tandridge district councillor for Godstone Nick Childs has called on local people to make South Godstone Sports Club F.I.T. for the future.
He said Fields in Trust offered a great opportunity to permanently protect the playing field for the community and for future generations. “Relying, as it does on the support of local residents to vote online, we need to ensure as many people as possible vote,” he said.

Spooky musical was lively laugh
WITH Halloween just gone, what better way to spend the evening than being spooked by the Forge Singers’ hilarious production of The Dracula Spectacula? Set in Transylvania – where else – it concerns the fortunes of an innocent young schoolteacher called Nadia Naive and her three pupils on a trip from their home in an American backwater. Together they must fight the forces of evil – namely Dracula, his mother Countess Wraith and servant Genghis – in this unfamiliar but amusing musical. Charlotte Edwards was suitably shy and retiring as the rather hopeless teacher Nadia and demonstrated a very good singing voice during her various solos. She was ably supported by her charges Julie (Marie-Anne Saunders), Kelly (Sam Saunders) and Elvis (Callum Goodhew), who maintained their American accents throughout. Part of the show is set in a traditional brauhaus, which was brought to life by loveable innkeepers Hans and Gretel, played with great gusto and exuberance by Karen Lynch and Denise Goodhew. Karen was so convincing as Hans in her lederhosen and beard that I had to look twice at the programme, while Denise Goodhew was equally good in her blond plaits. A catchy tune called Lubbly Glublick with some enthusiastic dancing was also a joy to watch.
Bob Dell looked good in his scary makeup and sombre suit as Dracula and Carol Thomas really put her all into making his mother Countess Wraith a real scream. Joshua Lynch was also in top form

as Genghis, while Dom Hepburn was dashing as the hero Nick. Kirsty Lynch put in her usual excellent performance as Nick’s sidekick Father O’Stake and Michael Vickery was dusty and spooky as Master Landau.
The Forge Singers made excellent use of the stage, using just a few props in the process. Of particular note was the aircraft scene and use of a load hailer by the pilot.
