Nearly a quarter of all enquiries dealt with by the Oxted and District Citizens Advice Bureau in 2010/11 were about debt, according to manager Lesley Robinson. “Debt has gone up again and goes up year by year and now forms almost a quarter of our workload,” she told the bureau’s annual meeting at St Peter’s Hall in Limpsfield recently. “People have been made redundant or taken cuts in their wages and this has led to housing problems.” Mrs Robinson explained that some people ended up losing their homes and if they were not eligible for social housing, they could face terrible problems in finding a place to live. Relationships could also be affected, causing anxiety and depression. “It has a big impact on their lives and affects our local community because there is more demand for GP services,” she said. “We are managing to cope with the additional debt work but it has been stressful for the advisors.”

Arrears on credit and store cards and unsecured loans made up 38% of debt problems, while 10% were about overdrafts. A further 16% related to bankruptcy and debt relief orders. A total of 25% of all inquiries at the bureau were about benefits – a slight drop on last year – with disability benefit issues accounting for one fifth.
