Tate Modern Gerhard Richter: Panorama

Opens 6th October

Panorama is a major retrospective that will highlight the significant moments of his long and illustrious career. The exhibition shows Richter’s amazingly diverse range of work - paintings based on photographs, abstractions, paintings made using a rubber squeegee, mirror works, glass constructions and even subtle landscapes that show Richter’s admiration for German Romantic painting. Richter’s subject matter varies as much as his style. As well as creating intimate portraits of family and friends, Richter also shines the light of his attention on historic world events. His 2005 work September, an image of the 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre, will be shown here for the first time.

C

oinciding with the German artist’s 80th birthday, Gerhard Richter:

‘I believe in nothing’, Richter has famously said. A statement that may go someway to explain the restless mutability of his prolific output. This Tate Modern exhibition promises to be a fascinating look at an artist who has spent a lifetime refusing to be pigeonholed.
