A time of challenges A time for change

F

or close to ten years we have been publishing ASIA, The Journal of Culture & Com- merce. During that time, we have changed our look four times, bur never our focus – the Asian and Pacific Islander community of San Diego and Southern California, its ac- complishments, its achievements and its inspiration.

Now it is time to change once more. But this time we are changing more than our design. We are chang- ing our direction.

We are living in troubled times economically. Little is certain about our future as a country and as a soci-

ety. Each day we are greeted with dour news. And when it seems we are just about to turn the corner, lo and behold – more dire news. It seems we just cannot advance out of this morass. We don’t pretend we have the answers. But we can rely on the inspiration we have gotten from our com- munity over the years to help chart a new direction for all of us.

That is at the heart of our change. Hence, you will not only see a new direction in writing. You will also see a new direction in design. Because we are taking a long-term approach, and because of the nature of our topics, we feel that a magazine, rather than newspaper, approach is a more suitable format.

We have never been a full newspaper in the sense that we report on breaking news. Our menu has been

people. We have written about them, extolled their virtues and celebrated their deeds. For the most part, we are of the belief that most people genuinely desire to do good, although they sometimes may be misguided or influenced by a “crab mentality” of bringing down others to make themselves appear better.

While we have not abandoned that belief, we will be taking a harder look at what we believe is harmful to our society and our community. With every step we take from now on, it is our purpose to provide a bea- con, however small it may be. At least, we hope, we can initiate discussion on the issues that deeply matter to us as a society.
