The More You Know… by Scott Robinson, LMT

LMT If you have been injured in an accident, slip and fall, playing
sports, or you even have chronic pain, no referral service will help you understand the type of treatment you need. They will send you to the next lawyer and treatment center on their very long list of places that pay them to do that. Compensation is important, but, what if it’s your fault? Or it’s not an auto accident? Who would you call?About 85% of injuries are soft tissue, (meaning muscle, tendon, ligament, joints) and no matter where you go, you will eventually have to get “soft tissue therapy” done. It is your response to these next few questions that will give you a better understanding of what you can do to avoid a perma- nent
injury...Some of the following Q&A may help
What is Medical Massage? Where massage therapy was once considered on the fringe of mainstream medicine, it has now gained widespread acceptance as a respected and regulated practice. Massage therapy is also considered an integral part of a healthy lifestyle. Doctors are prescribing massage therapy sessions for their patients and insurance companies are footing the bills. Medical Massage is cost effective by assisting the patient towards a quicker recovery from acute headaches, neck and back pain, skeletal muscular strains, sprain, etc. he or she is able to return to a normal productive life. According to the American Medical Massage Association, Medical Massage is: "a system of manually applied techniques designed to reduce pain, establish normal tissue tension creating a positive tissue environment, and normalize the movement of the musculoskeletal system". Medical massage is a scientifically based method of manual therapy that seeks a clear understanding of the scientific principles of physiol- ogy that affect connective and soft tissue healing and treatment.
What is Neuromuscular Massage? Neuromuscular Massage Therapy is defined as the re-education of a muscle’s normal function. The concept behind this massage therapy is when muscles spasm, which can be caused by a number of different direct or indirect stimuli, the spasm takes place in a very localized part of the muscle, not the whole muscle. Treatment of that spasm is the process of neuromuscular massage therapy. That localized spasm is called a trigger point. They are called trigger
points mainly because the localized area triggers pain in another area. Trigger points can be classified in a couple of different ways. One way is myofascial. Muscles are covered by a sheath of connective tissue called fascia. (Imagine the clear membrane on skinless chicken breast) With over use or injury, this fascia can become kinked or wrinkled causing pain and discomfort. Satellite is another way to classify them. Satellite trigger points send referred pain to a more distant area of the body which sometimes causes a misrepresentation of the cause of that pain. When a muscle (or trigger point) spasms in the body, blood flow to that area is severely decreased, sometimes ceasing altogether. When the blood flow is diminished, oxygen necessary for the muscle to work properly is also decreased, causing a buildup of lactic acid. This causes a sensation similar to the one felt after a long extreme muscle soreness.
What is Deep Tissue Massage? Deep Tissue Massage focuses on the different layers of tissue (muscle, tendons and fascia), working to relax, lengthen, and release strain patterns within them, so that the body's posture can realign itself. Physical and emotional traumas can tighten and stiffen these tissues. When this happens, the body moves out of a state of natural alignment and loses its flexibility and gravitational balance. Working deeply does not necessarily mean applying lots of pressure. The techniques used in Deep Tissue Massage are also applied more slowly, so as to avoid causing the recipient discomfort when working deeply into the muscle and connective tissue, as well as allowing the nervous system to integrate the work.
Which is right for me? Once you have the answers to some of these questions the next step would be to determine which if any of these is right for you. It’s impor- tant to understand why you would need therapy, and which type is appropriate. At A Touch of Wellness, we can explain which treatment may be right for you. We are also experts in soft tissue injuries. We work with many different doctors, to develop a treatment plan for a specific type of injury. The more you know, the better your chances
