throughout the Tampa Bay community to examine community members for signs of skin cancer. In 2011, Moffitt organized the Annual Men’s Health Forum, providing education and testing more than 500 medically underserved men in the community, distributing over 200 pros- tate cancer screening vouchers and 150 skin cancer exams provided by Moffitt. This initiative is a successful collaboration between many local hospitals and health care providers. Many of the men who attend view the Forum as their annual checkup because they lack these services otherwise.
Cultural and Linguistic Competency at Moffitt continues to evolve. Unlike many local hospitals, Moffitt staffs translators and medical interpreters to minimize the language barrier for patients. Many publications and our Web site are available in Spanish. Moffitt is striving to do more than address language; we also acknowledge the other impor- tant aspects of our patients, such as faith, family, experiences, beliefs.
Equity and Inclusion focuses on ensuring that policies and procedures support an inclusive environment for all faculty, staff and patients. This is particularly important for areas such as minority Clinical Trials Participation, Patient Diversity, Work- force Diversity; and Supplier Diversity.
Support & Technical Assistance to departments such as purchasing, human resources or many clinical area throughout Moffitt help to develop center-wide capacity to serve our diverse workforce, patients and their families, volunteers, and communities
Strong Partnerships with more than 200 community orga- nizations help to expand resources and improve capacity to reach targeted audiences. Moffitt engages community leaders to serve on the African American and Hispanic Advisory Coun- cils. The Diversity Advisory Board includes a cross-section of community leaders that share the concerns and perspectives of the Tampa Bay community. More recently, Moffitt and USF jointly established to Center for Equal Health as a result of receiving a $6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Researching Disparities to Save Lives Identifying disparities in health care is only the first step. Research is then needed to quantify and qualify the increased risk, and uncover breakthroughs that will provide better cancer treatment outcomes for minority and high-risk populations. By focusing on health disparities, we will be able to study these populations in the numbers needed to achieve valid, conclusive results. Moffitt Cancer Center is also supports programs designed to help train the next generation of health disparities researchers. This allows junior faculty and high school and doctoral students alike to learn about health disparities from senior researchers and mentors. The goal for this range of services and activities is to ensure that we are providing the opportunity for all of our community members to have ACCESS to state-of-the-art care, prevention, and education programs. Moffitt hopes and believes that we are making an impact in our various communities through these activities.
