Opportunities at NYPA Continue to Expand What’s more, much of NYPA’s energy is generated by its own motivated and diverse work force.

Did you know that the New York Power Authority has done more than half-a-billion dollars in business with minority- and women-owned enterprises?

Working with men and women of varied cultures and backgrounds gives us new ideas and perspectives that can improve the way we accomplish our goal of providing reliable, low-cost electricity and clean energy services throughout New York State.

Meet Alex Echeverria Director, Relay Protection & Control Engineering A

lex Echeverria began his NYPA career as an assistant

engineer in 1989, one year after graduating from Rensselaer Poly- technic Institute with a degree in electrical engineering. A native of Ecuador who was raised in the Bronx, Echeverria wanted to work for a utility because of the industry’s reputation for stability during tough economic times.

“Family is very important to me, and having a stable work environ- ment is crucial in raising and maintaining a strong family,” he explained.

At the New York Power Authority, Echeverria found not only job security but also intellec- tual satisfaction. “The technology you have access to at a utility like NYPA is a dream

come true for people in my field,” he said.

Echeverria rose through the ranks and was promoted in 2010 to his current position as Director of Relay Protection & Control Engi- neering, where he oversees a team of engineers and is responsible for protecting NYPA’s generation and transmission assets from short cir- cuits, overloads and other problems.

“Since I started at NYPA,

my most significant achievement was being promoted to director,” said Echeverria. “One of the greatest aspects of this new position is that I am still able to work as an engineer. I am not the kind of person who could simply delegate and run things from behind the scenes. I enjoy being in the forefront.”

We welcome inquiries from any individual looking to advance his or her career, or minority- and/or woman-owned business. To learn more, including a list of our latest job openings and/or business opportunities for your firm, visit: www.nypa.jobs.
