SIGHTS SET YOUR
Using a camera NOT a GUN!
Needless to say, this was the highlight of our trip. We had seen what we had come to see. Thousands of elk and bison, herds of deer and antelope, a few bears and birds, 5000 kilometers of beautiful scenery, but nothing to compare to 20 minutes of time watching one of Mother Nature's great predators defend their space.
Now the governments of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho have authorized a hunt of the endangered grey wolves, some of whom were just reintroduced to these states since 1996.
I do not mind that a rancher may have to kill a rogue wolf that may target his cattle herds. This does happen occasionally. The rancher does have to manage his herds with care and should also make sure that the wolf he sees eating a dead cow, did in fact kill that cow. The wolf or bear may just be taking advantage of an animal that died of natural causes.
One great study I have been following was written by William Ripple from Oregon State University. It is fascinating reading and a wake up call to all of us about the relationships between apex predators and the overall health and well being of our wilderness, including elk herds.
After a great day of shooting, this wolf wandered through the background, very near to my friends. This was the highlight of their trip; that they were able to get a photo of a wild wolf and themselves in the same picture. This is a highlight that will entice many more of their friends to visit the western states, bringing with them much needed tourism dollars, often in shoulder seasons.
