TRAVEL TIPS Travel Advice from Adventurer and Tour Agent Marika Martinez Expediting Airport Security on Departure:
• Pour out any water from your water bottle before you get to security • Remove your laptop and camera from your carry-on bag • Remove your watch and take coins out of your pockets • Remove your belt • Place all of these items in the tray provided by security • Have your passport and travel documents in a handy pocket of your bag or in a travel wallet that is easy to access
Comfort in Flight:
Firstly, you won’t be able to carry water with you through the security screening, so take your own empty plastic water bottle that you can fill up either once you have passed security or once you are aboard the plane. It is very important to drink plenty of water and I find that the amount of water that is offered aboard most flights just is not enough. Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration especially on long flights.
I like to carry a blow up neck support, it does not take up any room in your bag and makes sitting and snoozing in economy seats much more comfortable.
I find that it is easier to sleep with the following method: lay the seat back as far as you can and slide down in the seat a little, use the neck support, place the small travel pillow at the small of your back, place either another small pillow or a folded blanket under your feet. In this position you are as close to a laying position as is possible in an economy seat. Top this off with earplugs, an eye mask and a blanket.
On-line seat allocation prior to flying is advisable if the airline offers it, on most flights you can also check-in online.
Curtailing Customs on Arrival:
Pack so that you have put anything which you need to declare into a separate bag near the top of your suitcase. This bag should be removed before going through customs. This will minimize the need to unpack your suitcase at the customs counter.
If you have been hiking or in farm areas during your trip, make sue you clean your boots very well and keep them in a separate bag so you can show the customs people on the way through.
