NETGEAR ReadyNAS Ultra delivers the power you need to run bleeding-edge applications and the flexibility you want to store, share and protect your prized multimedia collections.
Two Gigabit Ethernet ports deliver ultra-fast connections, while another two USB ports offer the flexibility for users to connect other devices with a USB connection (e.g., printer servers, external USB storage devices or digital cameras).
The network ports can be used at the same time for failsafe and load-balancing purposes.
As a four-bay NAS server the unit is surprisingly compact with neat compartments easily accessible via a front door without the need for any tools.
Moreover, the flexible X-RAID2 configuration so, replacing or upgrading the server's internal storage can be done at any time, even when the server is running, without worrying about damaging the RAID setup.
The server can handle four SATA hard drives up to 2TB each, making the total ‘potential’ storage up to 8TB.
Although, by default the server sets up its internal hard drives using Netgear's X-RAID2 configuration whereby data integrity takes precedence over total storage capacity.
The advantage of this proprietary RAID setup is that allows you to dynamically expand the volume without having to back up or restore the existing content.
A small LCD located at the front of the unit indicates the IP address of the NAS server and status of the internal hard drive. Whilst, a back-up button proximal to the USB port, above the drive bays enables fast copy of contents.
The price bracket targets business/professionals, but is also appealing to passionate photographers that require large storage and easy access.
The Ultra 4 like other high-end NAS servers comes standard with media-streaming features. You can stream digital content to any UPnP- and DLNA-compliant network media players, as well as iTunes.
