EFFECTIVE PHONICS TEACHING WITH LETTERS AND SOUNDS Training is adapted to meet the needs of delegates. A full day of Continuous Professional Development will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to teach systematic synthetic phonics making full use of the Letters and Sounds programme.


The training is delivered by experienced advisers and consultants formerly part of Communication, Language and Literacy Development teams working nationally and locally and will :


• Consider the effective implementation of systematic synthetic phonics and its relation to children’s progress in speaking, listening, reading and writing


• Explore the recommended pace and progression of phonic teaching in Letters and Sounds


• Ensure that teachers understand the importance of fidelity to the programme


• Explain the subject knowledge and skills that underpin teaching each of the phases in Letters and Sounds


• Demonstrate the processes of blending and segmenting for reading and spelling


• Use Letters and Sounds to fully understand the sequence of teaching a discrete phonics session and how to plan for engaging and multi sensory lessons across a week and phase


• Provide materials and detailed guidance on tracking and assessing children’s progress in phonics


• Review the assessment of individual pupils’ progress, phonic knowledge and skills in order to identify pupils who are at risk of falling behind their peers


• Enable teachers to provide motivational opportunities, and hold high expectations, for children to apply their phonic skills in reading and writing including planning for the week and medium term.

Each school receives one resource kit (worth £75) from which teachers are able to deliver phonics lessons the very next day.

COMBINED PACKAGE


Schools booking a combined package of LS1 and LS2 will receive a 5% discount on individual delegate and consultancy rates and discounted group rates per delegate (min. 7) of 5% as detailed below.

Mainstream training


FOLLOW-UP DEVELOPMENT DAY This school based follow up training / consultancy day is designed to support senior leadership teams to review progress with implementation of systematic synthetic phonic teaching.


Support is tailored to the specific needs of the school and could include (but is not limited to) monitoring and evaluating the implementation of LS1, reviewing assessment of children’s progress and identifying children at risk of falling behind, providing further guidance to support children not making expected progress, supporting planning for progression, considering application of phonics skills in reading and identifying next steps.

Delegate day rate: £810 at client site

A full report will be given to the school following the consultancy day.
