CLOVERDALE, CA. ~ You never know where life will take you. For instance, take the 20 year insurance salesman who learned the wine busi- ness from the ground up after happening upon a Sebastiani booth at a job fair. Add a dilapidated 1909 Railroad Square building, which he transformed into a cool, hip tasting room with a grandiose triple arched mahogany bar. (It used to be on the other side of the adjoining wall, next door, at the old Mix restau- rant.)
The classy redo of this
National Register of Historic Places building includes wine barrel slat curved ceilings, spanning the upstairs seating area. Video monitors inserted in wine barrel tops offer infor- mation on the 32 wines being served by the glass, by the flight or by the bottle. This cooperative is the brainchild of Angie and Scott Jordan. Their Cellars of Sonoma offers savvy wine consum- ers the ability to sample and purchase boutique, small lot wines not readily available in

Angie and Scott’s gift to the Railroad Square neighbor- hood, the city of Santa Rosa and all of us who love to explore the wine world. Three hundred hotel rooms and four- teen restaurants skirt the area. You can have food delivered from any of these eateries, (often quicker than on site), while enjoying the wines and atmosphere of the Cellars of Sonoma. Scott does a Tuesday live broadcast with wine afi- cionados, provides live music four nights a week, and wine educational events. Whew, then there’s the
wines. We start
with a Amorosa Bella NV Sparkling Brut which is dry and full of bright Mendocino fruit flavors. You can sense the warm days plus the foggy nights infusing this wine with unique sweetness and sophis- tication. Next up is the Joseph-Jewell 2007 Dry Creek Valley ‘Grist Vineyard’ Zinfandel. Aptly named with its ruby jewel color, deep jammy-fruit struc- ture, soft tannins and spicy perfume. The former garage wine making duo picked the grapes at their peak and then punched down the berries by hand to avoid maceration.
