Experience a true Christmas Réveillon at la bohème


The Christmas Eve dinner in France is called Le Réveillon. It means “The Awakening” and comes from the ancient tradition of breaking a day long fast by eating a lavish meal after midnight mass on Christmas Eve. And though Midnight Mass is less popular nowadays, the tradition of a large meal continues, with many cafes and restaurants staying open late to serve Le Réveillon.


Each region in France has its own traditional Christmas menu, with dishes like goose, chicken, capon, turkey stuffed with chestnuts, oysters and boudin blanc (similar to white pudding). You will also fi nd foie gras, sea scallops, wild vension, partridge and farmhouse cheeses. The meal generally ends with a sumptuous dessert of fruit cakes, redolent with rum, and topped with cream.


It’s no surprise then that Christmas is my favourite time of year. It combines and celebrates my two passions in life; food and family. It’s all about companionship and camaraderie, which are really important to me, because without people, food is nothing. It must be shared to be enjoyed. Fine dining is more than fi ne food; it’s fi ne friends.


Christmas is also a time when I think of home. It’s an opportunity to marry my love of food with my love of France, because in many ways, when I think of one I think of the other. And that’s what Le Réveillon at La Bohème is all about, a taste of France in the heart of Waterford, where the moment you step through the door, you’re in a French restaurant on Christmas Eve.
