Institution news Getting to know you

Last month I outlined the IED’s strategy and some of our plans to meet the needs of existing members and attract new members. It is hard to understate what an exciting and busy time it is for the IED, and I’m pleased to be able to talk about two of the current developments: Design Ambassador and survey of members.

The Design Ambassador is an innovative new role we have been able to create with support from the Tony Bowden Fund. The aim is to promote design as a career, the benefits of professional registration and the IED to a range of organisations and individuals. I am pleased to say that we have been successful in recruiting Blair Hutton as our Design Ambassador, and you can learn more about Blair and his ambitious plans in this month’s ED, (see page 14 for a profile) and follow his progress on Twitter (@IEDAmbassador).

If you would like to contribute to any discussions write to David Maffin, Chairman, at The Institution of Engineering Designers, Courtleigh, Westbury Leigh, Westbury, Wiltshire BA13 3TA or email: david@ied.org.uk

We are also launching an on- line survey of members this month. We are doing this for two reasons; firstly, engagement and involvement of members is essential to the IED, and we are committed to providing members with the right support and communications. To do this we need to understand what members value most at different stages in their careers. Secondly, as the one institution representing designers across disciplines and industry sectors, we are keen to identify a number of key design themes which the IED should promote, develop and support. Therefore, the key aim of the survey is to understand the real and shared challenges faced by practising designers – do those challenges relate to design processes, methods and tools; environmental and sustainability issues; legislation and

standards; project management; CPD; etc? The possibilities are many! What we learn from the survey will influence the formation of special interest groups; the subject of articles in ED, courses and events the IED runs, and other member services. This is a real opportunity to have your say so please be encouraged to visit the IED website and complete the survey (www.ied.org.uk/survey).

I had the privilege of representing the IED at the 2011 final of Innovation Hothouse recently. This is an exciting project to foster the commercialisation of student design projects and is sponsored jointly by IED, RAEng, IMechE and IOM3. The finalists had come through regional events. It was very encouraging to see excellent understanding, not just about technological product design, but the breadth of commercial considerations in product innovation, and some very professional presentations which experienced entrepreneurs would be pleased to have delivered.
