Design Ambassador

Cutting a swathe

The IED’s first Design Ambassador – Blair Hutton MEng CEng MIED – talks to Mel Armstrong about his plans to promote design engineering to the next level.

‘A good communicator, bright ideas, enthusiasm and passionate about design engineering’. These are just a few of the qualities expected of the Institution’s first ever Design Ambassador. And the candidate who fits the profile perfectly is Blair Hutton.

During his 16-year career, Blair has gone from cutting his teeth at Eclipse Blind Systems Ltd, where he assisted in the development of a light sensitive window blind, to working for some of the most respected names in product design and engineering.

It’s difficult to believe that it nearly wasn’t to be. Leaving Paisley Grammar School with straight

‘A’s, Blair initially looked to become an architect. It wasn’t until he completed a week’s work experience drawing up plans for a garage on a manual drawing board that he realised it wasn’t for him.

Inspired by his father and uncle, both of whom were engineers, Blair hit upon the idea of studying a Masters in product design engineering. Since then he hasn’t looked back. After a brief stint at Ford Motor Company, Blair went on to work at Jaguar Cars where he managed a range of programmes. He developed the XK ‘Aluminium Interior’ for Special Vehicles and received a company merit award for delivering the XK ‘Carbon Fibre’ programme.

As Design Ambassador, Blair will be promoting the Institution and engineering design as a career alongside Education and Training Manager Judith Grace
