OKANAGAN OUTLOOK 2011 — 5 Penticton: Peach City a Green Leader


Penticton is all about the outdoors, even when you’re inside.


Thanks to Okanagan College, the Peach City is sure to become a leader in environ- mental awareness and stewardship along- side the traditional regional strengths such as agriculture and tourism.The college opened the doors this year to its $28-million Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Building Technologies and Renewable Energy Conservation.The “living class- room” encompasses state-of-the-art tech- nology in almost every facet of design and construction.


Students will use the 7,100-square-metre


building to study sustainable building tech- nologies, not only inside the classrooms and labs, but by studying the building itself. They’ll also research and develop alterna- tive and renewable energy sources.


“This Centre of Excellence will be a bea-


con for sustainability, not just in terms of its actual construction, but also in terms of the


programming and approaches it repre- sents,” said Okanagan College president Jim Hamilton. “It is already attracting na- tional and international attention. What’s most important is that it will provide access to unique programs and educational oppor- tunities for residents of the South Okanagan and the entire province.”


The Centre of Excellence is just the latest big-ticket operation for Penticton lately.The $23.3-million community centre pool opened in June to rave reviews.


Despite some growing pains, the South Okanagan Events Centre continues to draw crowds to performances such as Cirque du Soleil, Keith Urban and Toby Keith.


The Penticton Elvis Festival is also happy to call the SOEC home for its headliner’s showcase.The festival celebrated its 10th year in 2011 and has quickly become one of the region’s most popular events, kicking off the summer tourism season in style.The momentum is carried through to Peach


Festival in August, with 60 hours of free en- tertainment for five days at Okanagan Lake.


While they’re being entertained, many visitors can’t help pick up a bottle of wine to take home thanks to the region’s vast or- chards.There are more than 50 wineries within a 20-minute drive of the city. If you’ve worked up a sweat doing that, cool off with a float down the channel on an inner tube in summer.


If you don’t mind playing in the heat, you can always climb rocks at the Skaha Bluffs or enter the Subaru Ironman Canada race. Approaching 30 consecutive years of swim- ming, running and cycling, the Penticton event is the oldest Ironman triathlon in North America.


In winter, of course, the Penticton Vees hit the ice as perennial favourites in the B.C. Hockey League. And Apex Mountain wel- comes skiers – from daring Olympic freestylers to those learning for the first time – from across the globe.
