OKANAGAN OUTLOOK 2011 — 11 Oliver Taxiing for Take-off

The Wine Capital of Canada needs a dynamic airport, and that’s exactly what the Town of Oliver is pursuing.

In July, town council hired Cornerstone Planning Group to oversee the creation of the Oliver Airport Strategic Plan. Scheduled for completion in January, the plan has four goals:

— solicit community input — research opportunities and restraints — create development scenarios — determine the next step

A first-class airport would only further the town’s repu- tation as a vacation paradise. With just fewer than 5,000 residents, it’s estimated that Oliver welcomes more than 100,000 travellers every year. They come for the climate, the views and the wine.

Oliver is located just north of the U.S. border in one of Canada’s only desert environments. The town averages more than 2,000 hours of sunshine annually with an av- erage high of 30 C in the summer, and just -6 C in the winter months. No wonder agriculture thrives in the area.

With nearly 25 wineries – or 10 per cent of Canada’s

wineries – Oliver is quickly establishing itself as a pre- mier destination for epicureans and tipplers alike. Entering its 15th season, the Fall Festival of the Grape goes Oct. 2 and features food, wine and music.

If you want more than just grapes, the Country Market

A’Fair offers local produce in summer and fall at Lions Park.

They are just some of the many annual events that at-

tract visitors, and it’s not all about sitting and relaxing, ei- ther.

The Oliver Half Iron and Wine Capital of Canada

Triathlon are two of the premier events of their kind in B.C., Canada and the world. Nearly 800 athletes entered the Half Iron this season and another 250 in the WCOC.

For those who like to get outdoors at their own pace, the Golden Mile hiking trail is among Canada’s premier bird-watching areas with more than 20 excellent vantage points. To get on the water, consider a kayak or canoe ride on Tuc-el-Nuit or Vaseux lakes, neither of which al- lows powerboats.
