PREVIEW 2012 THE OKANAGAN SATURDAY, OCTOBER 29, 2011

Base price (incl. destination): $19,100 Base engine (hp): 1.8-litre DOHC I4 (122) l/100 km (city/hwy): 8.1/6.6 (MT); 7.5/6.3 (CVT)

Frontier

Mid-sized Frontier offers a less expensive and more fuel-efficient way to haul compared to the full-size Titan; changes limited mainly to minor trim adjustments. Carryover four-cylin- der and V6 engines, the latter being mandato- ry if you select the optional four-wheel-drive. The Frontier continues to be offered in both ex- tended-length King Cab and four-door Crew Cab body styles and in several trim levels, in- cluding the four-cylinder S, and SV and V6- equipped SV, SL and off-road-inspired Pro-4X (in either King or Crew Cab body styles). Base price (incl. destination): $26,000 Base engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I4 (152) Optional engine (hp): 4.0-litre DOHC V6 (261) l/100 km (city/hwy): 10.7/8.6 (2.5, MT)

GT-R The original GT-R (nicknamed Godzilla by its

loyal fans) that Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn un- veiled at the 2007 Los Angeles, Calif., Auto Show was, and continues to be, outrageous beyond words. How dare his company take on the world’s most exalted sports cars and claim absolute superiority. But dare it has, and the result is a super coupe that can keep up – and often surpass – Ferrari, Porsche, Aston-Martin, etc.and do it for a relative pittance. While there appears little to differentiate the 2012 edition from the previous effort, the GT-R sports a re- designed nose with larger grille openings, re- shaped front and rear spoilers, a new hood with aerodynamic “fins” and brighter LED (Light Emitting Diode) running lights. The result is a bit more downforce for added stability along with less wind resistance that, among other things, helps boost fuel economy to 13.0 l/100km city and 9.3 highway (previously 13.9/9.5). Updates can also be found beneath the sheetmetal, including minor suspension tweaks, improved Brembo-brand brakes and a carbon-fibre brace in the engine compart- ment that attaches to each shock tower. Base price (incl. destination): $112,200 Base engine (hp): 3.8-litre DOHC V6, twin- turbocharged (530) l/100 km (city/hwy): 13.0/9.3

Juke

As if the Cube wasn’t enough of a way-out- there design, Nissan created a size-small wag- on for 2011 that also fell into the love-it-or-leave- it camp. The Juke’s front end sports a pair of au- daciously shaped fenders that dominate the overall look. The headlights appear counter- sunk into the nose between the bumper and the grille, while integrated turn-signal pods are positioned on either side of the hood. The five- passenger cabin holds more freeform sculpting, especially the centre console that has been designed to resemble a motorcycle fuel tank. The primary gauges are oversized, the front seats are well bolstered and the split-folding rear bench seat can be flattened to maximize cargo space. The compact Juke is nearly two feet shorter than the Rogue tall wagon and at least 30 centimetres shorter than the Ford Escape. However, its generous width provides sufficient shoulder room for adults. Base price (incl. destination): $21,600 Base engine (hp): 1.6-litre DOHC I4, tur- bocharged (188) l/100 km (city/hwy): 8.3/6.4 (FWD, MT)

Leaf (New for 2012!)

The green Leaf is one of a host of non-hy- brid electric vehicles heading our way over the

Maxima The near-luxury Maxima receives a mild re-

fit for 2012 that includes a new grille, rear lights and wheels.More good stuff on the inside, too; for 2012, the Maxima’s base price has been reduced by $1,000, with no content reduction. A 290-horsepower V6 provides enough thrust, but the only-choice continuously variable trans- mission reduces Maxima’s otherwise sporty persona. Base price (incl. destination): $39,500 Base engine (hp): 3.5-litre DOHC V6 (290) l/100 km (city/hwy): 10.9/7.7

Murano NIssan Leaf

next few years. The hatchback Leaf is some- what larger than the Nissan’s compact Versa and, for comparison sake, nearly identical in size to Hyundai’s Elantra Touring (wagon). That makes it big enough to comfortably transport up to five people and/or carry a respectable amount of cargo. Although not exactly a look- er, the cute-in-its-own-way Leaf will definitely be easy to spot. The inside is more pleasing and the control panel provides some unique oper- ating functions, including connection to a “glob- al data centre” that allows drivers to receive assistance that ranges from technical support to entertainment selections. A dash-mounted display shows the level of battery power (or range) remaining and also indicates the loca- tion of the closest charging stations.Yet anoth- er optional system can remotely switch on the air conditioning through a cell-phone command and a remote-controlled timer can be preset to begin recharging the 192 lithium-ion battery cells located beneath the passenger compart- ment. The Leaf’s 80-kilowatt electric motor, which operates through a single-speed con- troller, produces the equivalent of 107 horse- power and 207 pound-feet of torque. Fully charged, the Leaf’s top speed is 145 km-h and the anticipated range is 160 kilometres. Base price (incl. destination): $40,000 Base engine (hp): 80-kw electric motor (107) l/100 km (city/hwy): n/a

Nissan’s curvy five-passenger tall wagon en- ters its 10th year looking as good as ever. Still uses the 265-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 combined with a continuously variable transmission. The Murano’s standard all-wheel-drive system is quick to react in moving the power around when traction is dicey. All models come with climate and cruise control, six-speaker audio systems and assorted power accessories. Base price (incl. destination): $36,150 Base engine (hp): 3.5-litre DOHC V6 (260) l/100 km (city/hwy): 11.7/8.5

Pathfinder

A traditional body-on-frame truck that’s built to go anywhere on or off road with up to sev- en aboard; easily one of the best-looking of its type on the market. Stout 4.0-litre V6 produces plenty of power; four-wheel-drive comes stan- dard on all trim levels. The base four-wheel- drive setup is a part-time affair, although you can opt for a system that includes a two-speed transfer case with a low range for off-roading. Base price (incl. destination): $39,600 Base engine (hp): 4.0-litre DOHC V6 (266) l/100 km (city/hwy): 14.9/10.3 (V6)

Quest

Nissan’s thoroughly updated minivan man- ages to appear more mainstream yet unique- ly different at the same time. The flexible cab- in layout, impressive storage capacity and a one-touch unlock feature so you don’t have to fumble around for the key fob when you have armloads of groceries or kids add to this mini- van’s functionality. A 253-horsepower 3.5-litre
