We read with interest the news this month that Tesco is opening new beauty shops within three of its biggest stores. Having introduced beauty salons earlier this year, the beauty retail areas in these stores will not only stock more premium brands than the retailer has done previously, but will also have manned beauty counters for several of them (see page 26 for more details). Tesco has embraced the fact that dedicated beauty retail staff can have a hugely positive effect on

customer experience and therefore sales – which of course, we have all known for years! In fact, the sales consultants are crucial to keeping the beauty business alive. For this reason, we launched our fi rst Pure Beauty Consultant of the Year Awards this year, to recognise and reward the staff whose passion, skill and knowledge make a real difference to their stores’ sales results. The winners were announced at the Pure Beauty Awards on 6 October where we also revealed the winners of our annual product awards – the best beauty launches of the past 12 months, based on innovation and effi cacy. You can read all about the winners of both sets of Awards from page 31. While NPD is a cornerstone of the vibrant beauty industry, we mustn’t forget the timeless heroes that have been around for years and still continue to appeal to customers – take a look at our classic brands feature on page 58 for some examples that have stood the test of time.

We hope you enjoy the issue! Emily Miller, Editor
