Filling in Application forms

Most funders have application

forms.

Make sure you read any guidance or information that they provide. When filling in an application form think about the following:

• Read the questions carefully

• Read the funder’s objectives and priorities carefully and try to ensure you meet them

• Answer all the questions – don’t be tempted to skip over difficult ones

• You are usually asked to send your most recent annual report and full accounts

• Do not send any other enclosures unless they are specifically requested

The Importance of Presentation

Your project might be really appealing but it can still fail if the presentation of the bid is a low standard. It needs to be clear and concise. You need to help those reading it get the gist as quickly as possible. By employing the following tactics you will increase your chances:

• Summarise the project in the first paragraph in order to grab the interest of the reader

• Present your bid in a dynamic way

• Make the application memorable. The main way of doing this is to give the project a catchy and descriptive name or to include photographs

• Present the information in the most appropriate way, you might use tables, graphics or figures along with text

• Keep the language simple and do not use jargon – use plain English

• Ensure there is logic to your application. Use headings and sub-headings to make it easier for the reader

• Use a font size that is easy to read

• Get someone else to read the application. Does it sound good to them?

• Check that you follow all the funder’s instructions regarding format, signatures, enclosures, etc

Application Letter

If there is no application form try and include the following information:

• Description of the project • How do you know there is a need for this work • What will be the benefits of the work? • How you intend to monitor and evaluate the work so you know if you have been successful?

• What is the income & expenditure budget? Include details of different funding sources
