Digging deeper into the truth about winter surfi ng

Don’t let the ice cold winter conditions put you off. Surfi ng in winter only gets better.

At last, the time has come for the surfer in your house to start getting excited, the winter storms will soon be sending Atlantic waves on to our famous surfi ng beaches such as Langland Bay, Caswell Bay and Rhossili Bay along with many semi-secret spots that offer excellent waves to the more advanced surfers.

In fact, that is what sets Gower apart from many other areas here in the UK, there are waves that suit all abilities, for example: Langland Bay hosts the sandbar, the reef, crab island, the lefts, and the point along with a few other spots. It is a paradise for advanced surfers/ club surfers in the winter and should not be used by novice surfers mainly due to the strong currents, rock- based reefs and, of course, the competitive crowds.

However, Caswell Bay and Rhossili Bay on the other hand offer a gentle sand-bottom beach break that is suitable to all levels but mainly beginners, junior surfers and next step surfers.

A breakdown on other Gower spots can be viewed along with tide times on the Gower Surfers Map which can be downloaded via the following link:

Gower has been a hot bed of British surfi ng since the 1960s and young talent keeps rising from the ranks with thanks to the development of surfi ng schools and surf shops in the region.

Currently, two of the top female surfers in the UK, Beth Mason and Gwen Spurlock, who both started at Caswell Bay as juniors, are fl ying the fl ag for Gower surfi ng and Wales, home and abroad.

With modern wetsuits allowing all ages and abilities to enjoy the winter waves and still have fun, it is certainly an exciting time for Gower as a surfi ng region. Why not get on board, surfi ng on Gower is great fun whatever the weather?

It may be cold, it may be really cold, but don the wetsuit, it’ll be worth it!
