Swansea YMCA has been undergoing an extensive programme of refurbishment over the last year.

Thanks to £1.2 million in funding, the listed building, which celebrates its centenary in 2012, has received a complete overhaul. A new fi tness centre, with upgraded equipment and changing facilities, is one of the main attractions. It is the only City Centre gym with instructors trained to assist people with visual impairments and also employs a member of staff who is visually impaired. A range of new classes are now up and running including Women’s Body Blitz and personal training sessions. GP referrals are also welcomed.

Swansea YMCA is a locally based charity which is passionate about helping young people and the community to build a brighter future. They provide a diverse range of sports, educational and social support services for people of all ages. The investment in a new recording studio, dance studio and theatre will improve access to, and participation in, the arts locally; it will also provide a base for community groups at affordable prices. Conferencing facilities are available at competitive rates with additional options for catering. A new lift will ensure that everyone can access the new facilities on offer.

Following the refurbishment, other local services will be based in the building on The Kingsway including City Day Nursery Childcare and d’Lish, a café offering nutritional and budget-based cooking courses, in addition to providing locals with freshly cooked, healthy food at a reasonable price. Working in partnership to improve the quality of life for local people, Swansea YMCA is visited by over 1,600 people per week, and currently houses eight other charity groups and organisations.

They have a well-established community Education Programme focusing on children, young people and adults, which aims to be fully accessible, friendly and affordable. The main aim of this provision is to work locally to improve peoples’ quality of life through learning and participatory activity that will also impact upon their health and well-being. So what are you waiting for, contact Cath at the YMCA today to fi nd out how you can get involved!
